We all have our fair share of worry and the blues, but how do we know if it is “more than normal”? There are various factors to consider when identifying clinically significant depression and anxiety. Some factors to be aware of are:

  1. Diminished interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable.
  2. Problems with sleep.
  3. A hard time concentrating or making decisions in everyday life.
  4. Recurrent thoughts of death or feelings that “ I would be better off dead”.
  5. Physical symptoms (such as headaches, nausea, stomach pains, chest pains, etc.)
  6. Restlessness or feeling easily fatigued.
  7. Irritability, depressed feeling or excessive worry more days than not.

These are some of the many symptoms that may indicate a more concerning level of depression and anxiety. If you or anyone you know is experiencing any of the above symptoms, or any symptoms that are concerning to you, it may be more than your everyday “ups and downs.” Talking to someone and referring to a mental health professional is important. Awareness is the first step.
